Commission on Air Pollution Prevention of VDI and DIN - Standards Committee KRdL

Requests for tender for CEN/TC 264 projects mandated and financially supported by EC/EFTA

CEN/TC 264/WG 15

The following project requires the development and validation of standardized test methods and is subject of this call for tender:

Elaboration of a new standard EN X "Ambient air – Automated measuring systems for the measurement of the concentration of particulate matter (PM10; PM2.5)"

For this project several networks, institutes, laboratories and a project coordinator will be contracted. They will cooperate in the development and validation of the required test method(s).

With Mandate M/503 of April 2012, the European Commission (EC) charged the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) to elaborate new standards.
In June 2012 the CEN Technical Board (BT) accepted Mandate M/503 and allocated the work to CEN/TC 264 "Air quality". The Commission on Air Pollution Prevention of VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure e.V.) and DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V.) – Standards Committee KRdL – holds the secretariat of CEN/TC 264.

The working group CEN/TC 264/WG 15 is responsible for the development of standards about the determination of the PM10 and PM2.5 mass concentration of suspended particulate matter. The Commission on Air Pollution Prevention of VDI and DIN – Standards Committee KRdL – provides the secretariat of CEN/TC 264/WG 15 and will perform the administrative management of the standardization work.

CEN/TC 264/WG 34

In June 2012 the CEN Technical Board (BT) accepted Mandate M/503 and allocated the work to CEN/TC 264 "Air quality". Working group CEN/TC 264/WG 34 “Anions/cations in PM2.5” will be responsible for the development of a standard method for the measurement of anions/cations in PM2.5.

NEN, the Netherlands Standardization Institute, will provide the secretariat of WG 34 and will perform the administrative management of the standardization work.

The task of WG 34 is to prepare a European standard on the measurement of cations and anions in PM2.5 in accordance to Air Quality Directive 2008/50/EC. No European standard currently exists and this standard is seen as a prerequisite to ensure compliance with the European legislation.

The European Standard will describe a validated method for the determination of the mass of water soluble anions and cations (NO3-, SO42-, Cl-, NH4+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+) in the PM2.5 fraction of particulate air pollutants. The validated measurement method will comprise the sampling of anions and cations as part of the PM2,5 particulate phase, the sample extraction and analysis of anions and cations by ion chromatography. Alternately, cations, excluding ammonium can be analysed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).
