Zu Pfingsten 1856 unterschrieben im Harz-Kurort Alexisbad 23 Ingenieure das Gründungsprotokoll des VDI. Seitdem ist der Verein Impulsgeber für zahlreiche revolutionäre technische Entwicklungen.
