The standard defines the terms used in the series of standards VDI/VDE 3699 and facilitate the understanding of the specifications made in the individual standards. By harmonising terms and defining their meanings the standard forms a basis for an understanding between experts. Relations between the terms by cross-referencing create a consistent "frame-work" of terms in the field of process control using display screens.
