Abstract
The causes for the failure of materials and components should be uncovered by failure analysis. The resulting findings form the basis of targeted measures for the damage remedy and prevention. One of the main tasks of failure analysis is the selection of appropriate examination procedures and the scientifically based and comprehensive evaluation of the results. Therefore, the standard defines terms, to designate and to describe types of damage consistently, enables for the systematic procedure for a failure analysis and ensures the comparability of the results of various investigative bodies. The standard describes the different types of failures, the failure symptoms, the causes of failures and failure occurs in case of mechanical stress.
