Speak Out for Engineering

Welcome to the first student competition “Speak Out for Engineering” in Germany.

“Speak Out for Engineering” is a student competition that aims to provide an opportunity to practice your professional presentation skills. The focus in the evaluation by the jury is not on the expert knowledge, but rather on “soft” aspects as, e. g. how the topic is introduced and how well your presentation is structured. The jury evaluating the presentations is interdisciplinary.

The 2022-competition will be a pilot consisting of four regional heats. They will take place in Hamburg, Magdeburg, Dortmund, and Munich in September/October 2022.
The winners of these regional rounds will qualify for the national finale that will be taking place at VDI HQ in Dusseldorf.

The first prize on the national level will be 300 £, the second prize will be 200 £. In addition, the winner will qualify for the European level final. This will be organized by IMechE which will also pay travel costs and accommodation for participants.

FAQ:

You will give a 20-minute presentation about a technical topic of your choice in front of a 4-5 members jury. The presentation will be followed by a 10-minutes Q&A session. The presentation has to be in English language, however, language skills will not be part of the evaluation. The focus is on the soft aspects of a presentation. Furthermore, the technical content will only make up 10 percent of the total evaluation. If you are successful, you may use the same presentation on the next level of the competition.

The competition is open to student members of VDI, both bachelor and masters level with a connection to the field of mechanical engineering (in the broadest sense).

Please send a 60-75 seconds video to sofe@vdi.de. In the video, tell us about yourself, your motivation to participate in this contest, and provide a very basic idea of the topic you want to present at the competition. It must be clear for which local heat you apply. Closing date for applications will be 31st July 2022, 12:00 CEST!

After the application is closed we will evaluate the videos and select four candidates for each local heat. We will come back to you until 30 August, 2022 via the e-mail provided during application.

Travel expenses to the local heats will be covered by VDI (public transportation, 2nd class). Travel expenses to the national finale in Dusseldorf will also be covered by VDI. Applicants need to be from the region of the four initial heats. An expansion towards additional locations is planned for 2023.

The local heats will take place in September/October 2022. The finale in Dusseldorf is scheduled for October/November 2022. The exact dates for all five events will be announced soon!

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is a British mechanical engineering associations celebrating its 175th birthday this year. In order to facilitate cooperation through joint activities, VDI and IMechE signed a cooperation agreement in April 2022. One of the joint topics will be supporting engineering students and young professionals in the development of their non-technical skills. The competition “Speak Out For Engineering” (SOFE) organised by VDI Young Engineers in 2022 for the first time in Germany is planned to be the starting point for a number of joint activities.
