Speak Out for Engineering
Speak Out for Engineering empowers engineering students to showcase their ideas in English and develop strong presentation and communication skills in an international competition.
Welcome to the student competition “Speak Out for Engineering” in Germany
“Speak Out for Engineering” (SOfE) is a competition that aims to provide you with an opportunity to practice your professional presentation skills in English in a competitive but fun environment. You give a 20-minute presentation in front of an interdisciplinary jury about a technical topic of your choice. So far, the range of topics stretched from offshore wind turbines, via the use of algae in space travel, to case hardening simulations.
Your presentation is followed by a 10-minute Q&A round, where the jury can ask you follow-up questions. The focus in the evaluation of your overall performance by the jury is not on the professional knowledge or language skills, but rather on “soft” aspects, e.g. how the topic is introduced, how well your presentation is structured, how your use of presentation techniques and tools is, and how well the audience can follow your topic.
The competition is co-organized in Germany by VDI, with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers being the overall organizing institution.
The competition consists of several rounds:
- The first round: Regional heats across Germany give all students the possibility to participate in the competition.
- The second round: The winners of the regional heats qualify for the national final which will take place at VDI headquarter in Düsseldorf. The runners-up may be invited to the national final, if need arises. The winner of this round receives a prize money of 300 £ and the runner-up 200 £.
- The third round: The winner of the national final qualifies for the regional final on European level. This will be organized by IMechE which will also pay travel costs and accommodation for participants. The winner of this round receives a prize money of 500 £ and the runner-up 300 £.
- The fourth round: The winner of the regional final qualifies for the world final, which is also organized and funded by IMechE. The winner of this round receives a prize money of 1,000 £ and the runner-up 500 £.
For each round participated in every participant receives an official certificate.
How to take part!?
The competition is open to all students, both bachelor and masters level, both universities and universities of applied sciences, with a connection to the field of mechanical engineering (in the broadest sense). While VDI membership is not generally a prerequisite, a VDI membership is necessary in order to be eligible to the prizes!

The application period for SOfE DE 2026 will be announced here in early Spring 2026.
The regional and national competitions will be taking place in late summer/ early autumn. The dates will be announced shortly.
FAQ:
After the application is closed, we will evaluate the information and select four candidates for each local heat.
Travel expenses to the local heats will be covered by VDI in accordance with VDI’s regulations concerning refunding of travel expenses (DB/public transportation, 2nd class). The costs for travel by car can only be covered after prior confirmation with the organizers. Travel expenses of the candidates to the national finale in Dusseldorf and accommodation for one overnight stay will also be covered by VDI.
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is a British mechanical engineering association which celebrate its 175th birthday in 2022. In order to facilitate cooperation through joint activities, VDI and IMechE signed a cooperation agreement in April 2022. One of the joint topics will be supporting engineering students and young professionals in the development of their non-technical skills. The competition “Speak Out For Engineering” (SOFE) organized by VDI Young Engineers in 2022 for the first time in Germany is the starting point for a number of joint activities.
Competitions
Am 06. November 2025 fand zum mittlerweile vierten Mal das nationale Finale von „Speak Out for Engineering“ im VDI-Haus in Düsseldorf statt. In diesem Jahr präsentierten sechs Kandidat*innen. Dabei waren die Themen wieder breit gefächert. Der erste Platz und damit die Teilnahme am Ausscheid für die Region Europa ging an Oscar Barthel. Er überzeugte die Jury mit seiner Präsentation zu „Microchips and EUV-Lithography“. Wir drücken die Daumen für den weiteren Verlauf! Den zweiten Platz belegte mit seiner Präsentation „The Kalman-Filter“ Johannes Steffen. Beiden gratulieren wir zu den Preisen.
Am 28. November 2024 fand das nationale Finale von „Speak Out for Engineering“ (SOfE) in unseren Räumlichkeiten in Düsseldorf statt. Sechs Kandidat*innen, die sich zuvor in vier Vorrunden mit ihren Präsentationen durchgesetzt hatten, sprachen zu Themen vom Recycling von Windkraftanlagen, über Wettrennen mit solargetriebenen Fahrzeugen und den Bau von autonomen Segelbooten bis hin zum Potential von Wärmepumpen. Der erste Platz und damit die Teilnahme am Ausscheid für die Region Europa ging in diesem Jahr an Andreas Weskamp. Er überzeugte die Jury mit seiner Präsentation zum Mehrwert des „Flat-spin testing“ im Bereich der Luftfahrttechnik. Wir drücken Andreas die Daumen für den weiteren Verlauf!
Am 9. November 2023 fand zum zweiten Mal das nationale Finale von „Speak Out for Engineering“ im VDI in Düsseldorf statt. In diesem Jahr präsentierten acht Kandidat*innen zu Themen wie Potenziale des 3D-Druck in der Medizintechnik oder Wassersstoff als Energieträger der Zukunft. Der erste Platz und damit die Teilnahme am Ausscheid für die Region Europa ging an Yannic Lorenz. Er überzeugte die Jury mit seiner Präsentation zu „Case hardening simulation using the finite elements method“. Wir drücken die Daumen für den weiteren Verlauf!
Im Jahre 2022 führten wir als VDI den Präsentationswettbewerb für Ingenieurstudierende „Speak Out for Engineering“ (SOfE) erstmals in Deutschland durch. Nun hat der VDI Young Engineer Alexander Eckervogt, Master Studierender an der RWTH Aachen, beim globalen Finale in London den zweiten Platz belegt. Damit hat er sich in einem mehrstufigen Prozess gegen eine Vielzahl von Mitbewerber*innen durchgesetzt.
London, 7. September 2023. 30 Grad und Sonnenschein im Herzen von Westminster. Im globalen Finale des Präsentationswettbewerbs „Speak Out for Engineering“ (SOfE) treten auf Einladung der britischen „Institution of Mechanical Engineers“ (IMechE) sieben Ingenieurstudierende aus der ganzen Welt mit ihren Präsentationen an. Mit dabei ist der VDI Young Engineer Alexander Eckervogt, der nach seinen Erstplatzierungen beim nationalen Wettbewerb in Deutschland und beim regionalen Ausscheid für Europa, die Region Europa vertritt. Das Thema seiner Präsentation: „Floating Offshore Wind Turbines“.
Die anderen sechs Kandidat*innen aus verschiedenen Teilen Asiens, dem Mittleren Osten und Amerika haben sich ebenfalls in ihren jeweiligen Regionen in einem mehrstufigen Verfahren aus lokalen Vorrunden, nationalen Finalen und regionalen Ausscheiden durchgesetzt. Die Themen reichen vom Design von e-Motorrädern, über Photovoltaik bis hin zur Bernoulli-Formel. Das Thema bestimmen die Teilnehmenden und der fachliche Anteil fließt nur mit zehn Prozent in die Wertung der vier-köpfigen Jury ein. Hier geht es nicht um Technikwissen, sondern um Präsentationskompetenzen in englischer Sprache.
Am Ende des Wettbewerbs überzeugt die Xiao Jiang aus China die Jury mit ihrem Vortrag zur Bernoulli-Gleichung. Alexander Eckervogt schafft es am Ende auf Platz 2 und sagt: „Für mich war der Wettbewerb eine Möglichkeit, meine Kompetenzen über einen Zeitraum mehrerer Monate zu trainieren. Natürlich freut man sich über die Preisgelder und die Übernahme der Reisekosten.
Allerdings standen der Spaß am Vortragen meines Themas und die Erweiterung meiner Präsentationsfähigkeit als Motivation im Vordergrund. Vielen Dank an den VDI für diese tolle Möglichkeit!“
„Es freut mich ungemein, dass wir im Pilotlauf dieses großartigen Formats als VDI gleich einen Kandidaten ins globale Finale bringen konnten“, sagt Marten Berlin, der seitens der VDI Young Engineers die Einführung von SOfE in Deutschland begleitet hat und nun in London dabei war. „Das ist ein super Format, das Teilnehmenden einen echten Mehrwert bietet. Ich freue mich auf die zweite Runde in diesem Jahr und die dauerhafte Etablierung des Wettbewerbs in Deutschland.“
