Additive manufacturing(AM) processes feature a freedom of design to a great extent compared to the design limitations of other processes. They have the potential to reduce production time and costs while increasing functionality. However, even with additive manufacturing processes, there are still constraints depending on the process and material used. The test specimens defined in this standard help to investigate these limitations. If dimensioned adequately, some test specimens of this standard can be used for performance rating and calibration of an AM machine as per DIN EN ISO/ASTM 52902. This standard addresses producers and operators of AM machines, material producers and AM part designers. Producers and operators of AM machines can check their machines using the test specimens. Material producers can investigate the processing properties of their materials on AM machines. Designers can create characteristic numbers for part design using the test specimens.
