The quality criteria of machined surfaces of wood and wood-based materials usually are less oriented to their functional performance. The focus is directed to aesthetics or appearance which are often a critical factor in purchasing decisions made by the customer. In the case of wood and wood-based material surfaces, therefore, quality assurance measures for technical surfaces and the associated standards often do not apply or are not applicable. This standard supplements the statements of VDI 3414 Part 1 and Part 2 given for characteristics as well as measurement and test methods, by adding specifics for milling, sawing, planing, drilling and turning. Specific characteristics and measurement methods are presented, and instructions are given for their application.
